The National Foundation for Australia-China Relations provides grants to projects that develop, promote and strengthen understanding and engagement between Australia and China. In particular, the objectives of the grant program include: promoting connections and practical engagement; building understanding and exchange; showcasing Australian excellence; engaging Australia’s diverse communities; and supporting delivery of major events for 2022.

Global Engagement and Entrepreneurship provides Global Strategy Framework and Global Engagement Briefs. The Global Strategy and Partnerships (GSP) team welcome inquiries to identify potential partners in China.

Applications close 12 March 2021, 5 pm Queensland time. UQ internal deadline: 5 March 2021 


  • Eligibility: Please consult the guidelines for the eligibility of your project
  • Funding: The estimated grant value is from $20,000 to $1,000,000 for a maximum of 2 years. Co-contributions from UQ (Schools/Faculties/Institutes) must be included and will be regarded positively.
  • Overheads: Indirect costs/overheads are not funded by this scheme.
  • Salaries: Labour costs of Australian employees directly employed to deliver the core elements of the grant project (but not ongoing salaries) are eligible. Please refer to point 5.3 of page 6 of the guidelines for a list of all exclusions.

How to Apply

Step 1. Preparing the application

NAFR Guidelines & Application form are available from the DFAT website. All Expression of Interests and applications must be submitted by the applicant electronically using the SmartyGrants online application form.

The GSP team will provide a letter of support template, application cover sheet template, brief UQ capacity statement and information on UQ’s engagement in the country of your application upon request. Please allow five days for the GSP team to process the letter of support.  Letter of support will be issued after the signed cover sheet is received by the GSP team.

Step 2. GSP internal review and feedback

For GSP review on compliance and feedback (upon request), please email your application to the GSP team by 5 March.

Step 3. Submitting the application

All applications must be submitted by the applicant electronically using the SmartyGrants online application form.
